“What do those brazen girls afford to present themselves nearly naked in public?!” Plenty of tory people and (self-declared) guardians of public moral for sure got a shock seeing young women dressed in bathing suits like this on England’s beaches in the mid-1920s. But after the struggles and hardships that followed the Great War, societies all over Europa changed rapidly. The War had showed the people how fast normal life can (literally) end and they lust for fun, entertainment and amusement. These social changes were not only transformation of political systems, with the crashes of the Russian, German and Austrian Monarchies as examples, but also women’s emancipation that included not only the right to vote or the allowing to drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes in public but also a new, more body contoured fashion.
